Booking Edinburgh hotels in festival season

Every August the city hosts the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and other festivals, and hotels fill up and get much pricier. If you’re going then, book as early as you can, compare carefully, and look at areas just outside the centre such as Leith or Haymarket. Hogmanay (New Year) is another very busy time.

Getting around

The centre is compact and walkable, though hilly. Trams run from the airport through Haymarket and Princes Street to Leith, which makes hotels along the line handy for early flights.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I stay in Edinburgh?
The Old Town is right by the castle and the Royal Mile. The New Town has grand Georgian streets, shopping and many restaurants. Leith offers a waterfront feel and often better value, with a tram into the centre.
When are Edinburgh hotels most expensive?
August (festival season) and Hogmanay are usually the busiest and most expensive times. Compare across sites and book early for those dates.
